Description:
The Great Ohio Adventure Trail (GOAT) is a premier long-distance route designed specifically for adventure motorcycles and overland vehicles, marking the first route to traverse the entire state of Ohio.
The Epic Journey
The GOAT is an ambitious journey spanning over 1,100 miles, connecting the Ohio River in the south (starting near Ripley) all the way up to Lake Erie in the north (ending near Conneaut). This north-to-south (or vice-versa) expedition typically requires 5 to 7 days to complete, depending on the rider's pace and desired stops.
Terrain and Difficulty
The route was developed with beginner to intermediate skill levels in mind, making it highly Big Bike Friendly. The focus is on scenic adventure touring, promoting accessibility to the state's lesser-known corners.
The terrain primarily consists of:
Rural Byways and Paved Roads: Connecting small towns and historic sites.
Gravel and Dirt Roads: The backbone of the adventure, utilizing remote township roads and forest roads.
Minimal Technical Challenge: The route is deliberately designed to use two-way public roads, avoiding single-track, aggressive off-road trails, and deep water crossings, though you will encounter small creek crossings and various levels of loose gravel.
Highlights and Scenery
The GOAT is a showcase of Ohio's diverse landscape and history, passing through:
Appalachian Plateau: Traversing the rugged, forested hills and historical sites of Southern Ohio.
Wayne National Forest: Passing through all three units of the largest forest in the state, offering beautiful wooded sections.
Shawnee State Forest: Known as the "Little Smokies of Ohio," providing expansive views and winding roads.
Historic Sites: The route starts near the John P. Parker House (an Underground Railroad site) and leads past historic iron furnaces, covered bridges, and rural Amish communities in the central regions.
State Parks: The route utilizes campgrounds and amenities in several State Parks and Forests along the way.
The GOAT is an excellent self-guided option for riders looking for a long-distance, accessible adventure that focuses on exploring the rich history and beautiful backcountry roads of the Buckeye State.
