Description:
The Kentucky Adventure Tour (KAT) is a legendary, extensive route designed for dual-sport and overland enthusiasts that winds through the rugged beauty of southeastern Kentucky and parts of bordering states (Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia).
Route Overview
The KAT is a massive 900 to 1,000+ mile loop that showcases the best of the Appalachian culture and terrain. The route is self-guided, relying on shared GPX files, and is typically completed over 5 to 7 full days of riding on a motorcycle.
The loop is an excellent mix of surfaces:
40% is composed of narrow, twisty paved roads through scenic Appalachia.
The remaining 60% consists of gravel, forest service roads, dirt roads, and two-track trails.
Terrain and Difficulty
The KAT is famous for being both scenic and challenging.
Main Route: The main loop is suitable for experienced riders on mid-to-large-sized adventure bikes, provided they are comfortable with loose gravel, dirt, and remote conditions.
Hard Sections: The KAT features numerous clearly marked "Hard Sections" that are optional detours. These sections are much more technical, often featuring steep, rocky climbs, deep mud pits, significant water crossings, and heavily rutted trails. These are generally reserved for smaller, more capable dual-sport bikes and require experienced handling.
Highlights
The route passes through or near stunning landmarks, including:
The Daniel Boone National Forest, which forms the backdrop for much of the riding.
The Red River Gorge Geological Area, known for its arches and unique rock formations.
Scenic views along the Pine Mountain Ridge and historical sites like the Hensley Settlement.
The KAT is a true backcountry adventure, offering an immersive experience in the wild side of the Southeast. Riders should be prepared for remote conditions, often traveling in groups, and carrying the necessary gear for mechanical issues and self-sufficiency.
This is a self guided tour at your own risk on your own bike. Please note that road conditions can change, and please be respectful of public roads so other can enjoy this route in the future. Usdualsports is in no way responsible for your riding skills and how you use this GPX file.
