DRZ-400 Key Switch Relocation (FREE)

As part of our DRZ-400 Adventure Bike Build the stock ignition placement is a bit of a nuisance—especially once you move to “fat bars” (1 1/8″) or add risers, which often block your view of the key or make it a struggle. While some riders move the key to the side of the forks, that leaves the key vulnerable to being snapped off in a crash or by trail brush.

By shifting that bracket over and utilizing just one mounting bolt, you effectively tuck the ignition out of the way of the triple clamp/fork area.

Why this mod is a “must-do” for many:

• Fork Height Adjustment: As you mentioned, the stock ignition bracket often physically blocks the fork tubes from being slid up in the triples. This mod is essential if you are lowering the bike for a shorter inseam or quicker turn-in.

• Bar Riser Clearance: It prevents the ignition switch from binding against the beefier 1 1/8″ bar clamps.

• The “Bonus” Switch: That leftover hole is the perfect diameter for a standard waterproof toggle switch.

Tools Needed

• Metal File

• Vice or Channel Locks

• Blue Loctite (242)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Disassemble: Remove the key switch and the mounting holder from the bar mounts.

2. Modify the Bracket: Use your file to cut a small “V” notch into the key switch mount. This provides the necessary clearance to sit flush against the gauge cluster.

3. Relocate: Reinstall the mount using only one hole, shifted one position closer to the gauge cluster.

   • Note: Because you are only using one bolt now, you must use Blue Loctite to prevent the vibration of the engine from backing the bolt out.

4. Check Clearances: Turn your handlebars slowly from lock to lock. Ensure your wiring harness has enough slack and isn’t being pinched by the frame or the forks.
